Joy in the Garden

The cosmos flowers are in full bloom. The stems carry variants of color that bend and sway in the breeze.

I agree with this quote by William Wilberforce: Lovely flowers are the smiles of God’s goodness.

Perhaps the flowers will self-seed and come back next year (I hope). The seed pods that appear after the flower are packed full of seeds. I have collected some for next year.

This year I was surprised by a tomato plant that has grown voluntarily among the weeds in my garden. It has a flower now. Is there enough time for a tomato to grow?

The time I spend in the garden is refreshing and turns my thoughts to the Creator.

And God said, “Let the earth sprout vegetation. Plants yielding good seed, and fruit trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind, on the earth. Genesis 1:11

What gives you joy?

  1. Well, my wife, she has a garden
(In the desert? That’s a hoot!),
but gotta say it’s really startin’
to look up and take some root
    in the dry caliche soil
that she’s done lots to improve
at the cost of endless toil,
but when she works she’s in her groove
    of this most beloved thing,
    drawing beauty from the earth,
and I see how it can bring
to the soul a fresh new birth
and saves her from always wishin’
I’d move my Harley from the kitchen.

  2. We had a random squash plant take over my front flowerbed. It didn’t produce anything, but a watermelon plant sprouted in my burned-up garden a few months ago and we have eaten the most delicious fruit from it. It wasn’t planted, and it has received no tending to whatsoever, but the harvest has been sweet! Thank you Lord for lessons in the garden!
