The book of Psalms in the Bible gives great comfort. Throughout the poetic words there is a plea for God’s help and acknowledgement of his love and mercy. The Psalms offer both lament and worship. Here is one of my favorite verses as recorded in the Complete Jewish Bible.
You make me know the path of life, in your presence is unbounded joy, in your right hand eternal delight. Psalm 16:11
In my life I have encountered the mental illness of my brother. Eventually I became his guardian. I was shaken by my son’s battle with cancer that he lost after two years. Hard things have happened. I have grieved but I was never abandoned by God. He saw me and helped me. Joy comes from knowing God and trusting his love, despite a broken world.
Currently I am reading Life With God: Reading the Bible for Spiritual Transformation by Richard Foster with Kathryn Helmers. I highly recommend this book. Here is a quote from the second chapter (p. 25):
It [God’s laws] was intended not as a burden upon people, but as a way of life that would enable them to stay in relationship with their Creator, their Redeemer, their Sustainer.
The verse today, from I-Bible.com, is Jeremiah 10:23. Adonai, I know the way of humans is not in their control, humans are not able to direct their steps as they walk. CJB
We need God’s guidance for ourselves, for our families and for our country. God makes us know the path of life and joy when we seek his guidance.
