Reading Good Books

Many books that I read are historical fiction–lots of books about WWI and WWII. In the past couple years, I have found Anne Perry’s books. While most of her books are late 1800s and early 1900s, she has one that is focused on the years 1273 to 1282.

The Sheen on the Silk tells the story of the conflict between Byzantium (Constantinople) and Rome. Rome sought to have Constantinople and the Orthodox believers under its control.

I was drawn into the story with the rich description of that era and colorful characters. Perry has a keen sense of human nature. The book is long, 515 pages, but worth the read. At the end of the book is a long list of references that Perry used to inform her story.

Currently I am reading three books that are not historical fiction: Life with God by Richard Foster, Chosen People by Robert Whitlow and Timothy Keller: His Spiritual and Intellectual Formation by Collin Hansen.

    1. Annette, I recently learned that Anne Perry had a very tragic young adult life–perhaps it informs her writing. She participated in a murder and spent five years in prison as a juvenile. She repented–it seems she had good counsel in prison, and to the best of my knowledge pursued faith.

    1. I recently read Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand. It is the true story of Louis Zamperini. His plane went down in the Pacific and he was on a life raft for 47 days, then captured by the Japanese and held as prisoner of war. It is a tough read but has an inspiring end.

  1. I loved Anne Perry’s mystery series and remember reading The Sheen on the Silk years ago and enjoying it immensely, although I don’t remember it well now. Perhaps it’s worth a re-read! Thanks for the reminder. Visiting from FMF#10
