Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. Genesis 2:24
Next week the women of our church will hold a bridal shower for a woman in our church. As I looked for the right gift, I have been thinking about what marriage has meant in my life.
The statement in Genesis, they shall become one flesh, is challenging, and yet it is God’s design.
My husband and I came together with different life experiences. I grew up in a Finnish Lutheran community. My husband grew up in a Dutch Reformed community. When we married, I was a nurse, trained to react quickly to situations. My husband was an engineer, taking the long view of situations, thinking through all aspects.
Becoming one meant that we needed to communicate with each other, taking time to listen and understand. We have needed to forgive each other. We have learned from each other. Marriage has been refining, and we have both grown in our faith.
As we pay attention to God’s Word, we see the truth conveyed for our flourishing.

Loved this post and your take on this week’s prompt.
Thanks for sharing.
I like your take on this word prompt. Marriage… helping two people, become a singular unit. visiting from FMF23
Your post is a good reminder. God’s design for marriage is amazing. He does everything well. In fact, He declared his final act of creation “very good.” Genesis 1:31
I love this, so thought provoking. Thanks for sharing. FMF neighbour no 20 🙂
