When I Am Afraid

When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. Psalm 56:3

During the years that my son battled leukemia the Psalms were a comfort and a guide for me. I found permission to cry out to God with my questions and my pain. I kept praying, kept communicating with the Lord God.

The Psalms also encouraged me to trust God. The Psalmist mentions God’s faithfulness over and over. In this world we have trouble. We encounter crises of health, finance and relationship. God will give us guidance and help if we seek Him.

Steven was treated with a high-risk chemotherapy protocol. When it failed, he received a bone marrow transplant. When it failed to heal him, he received one more attempt at chemotherapy. In his final days at home, he trusted God. We were at his bedside when he died.

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. Psalm 23:4

We have tools to get us through difficult times. We have the Bible, past experiences of God’s help, prayer and the church. I have been blessed by the prayers of faithful followers of Jesus.

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way,
though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea
,

though its waters roar and foam,
though the mountains tremble at its swelling
. Psalm 46:1-3

The forsythia bush was blooming when Steven was promoted to heaven.

  1. My heart hurt for you as I read this. I can’t even start to imagine how incredibly devastating it must have been.
I’m glad you had a relationship with the Lord and were able to find comfort through the book of Psalms. I don’t know how anyone without Jesus in his or her life could make it through a time such as that.
