My sister passed along a book that she had recently read. Dolly: A Novel of Dolley Madison in Love and War is by Rita Mae Brown. It was published in 1994.
Brown did extensive research for this book with a focus on the Madison presidency during the war of 1812. I read with interest because I did not know much about James Madison (other than his work on the United States constitution), Dolley Madison or the war of 1812.
The book points out the political disagreements over the war and the divisions between the northern states and the southern states. The two political parties had hardened positions. As a result, the ability to fight the British was weak and disorganized. The British burned the Presidential mansion, the Capitol and government buildings in Washington D.C.
Throughout the difficult days, Dolley was steadfast in support of her husband and the young nation. I enjoyed reading about her family life and her courage.
My thoughts turned to the other times of crisis in our nation: the Civil War to end slavery, the financial crash in the 1930s. Our nation came through those times. We are in the midst of a time of division now. I think about the children growing up, their future.
It is important to stay informed, pray for discernment, pray for our country and vote.
