Last week my sister and I spent several days in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. We stayed in a house that was seven miles from the nearest small town. Lake Superior was just a little further away.
One night I woke up at 4 a.m. and happened to look out the bedroom window. The sky was filled with twinkling bright stars. I went outside to look with wonder. The stars filled the sky. I tried to pick out some constellations but there were so many—and so bright!
There was only one responsible reaction to the majesty of the night sky. I gave thanks to God for the beautiful sight. I remembered verses in the Psalms and in Isaiah.
When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars, which you have set in place,
what is man that you are mindful of him,
and the son of man that you care for him?
Yet you have made him a little lower than the heavenly beings
and crowned him with glory and honor. Psalm 8: 3-5
Lift up your eyes on high and see:
who created these?
He who brings out their host by number,
calling them all by name;
by the greatness of his might
and because he is strong in power,
not one is missing. Isaiah 40:26
