Our Country, the Bible and Families

As I listened to the band play the song for each branch of the army, I thought of my Dad. He had been a co-pilot during WWII, carrying out missions over Europe. He didn’t talk about it much until late in life.

My son-in-law was playing the trumpet in a community band on the 4th of July. We enjoyed a lovely concert.

We were sitting in a park, my husband, daughter and grandchildren. It was a beautiful evening and the music continued. We heard America the Beautiful, God Bless America, 76 Trombones and many more tunes.

After the sunset the fireworks began. The grandchildren had light up strips that they formed into necklaces, bracelets and anklets. Families filled up the park lawn. It was a joyful evening.

I am thankful for our country and the founding fathers. There were 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence. Only a few are well known. I found the biography of John Witherspoon to be interesting and inspiring.

There were 39 signers of the Constitution that has guided our country for over 200 years.

The first complete English Bible printed in America (1782) was approved by Congress following Robert Aiken’s letter to Congress. Here is part of his letter:

Under this persuasion your Memorialist begs leave to, inform your Honors that he both begun and made considerable progress in a neat edition of the Holy Scriptures for the use of schools, but being cautious of suffering his copy of the Bible to issue forth without the sanction of Congress, humbly prays that your Honors would take this important matter into serious consideration & would be pleased to appoint one Member or Members of your Honorable Body to inspect his work so that the same may be published under the Authority of Congress.”

During a webinar I learned about a book that recorded the history of notable women during the early days of our country, Pioneer Mothers of America. You can access a digital version of the book here.

As a nation, we have been blessed. It is important that we remember our heritage!

  1. I agree! Our history and our foundation of faith is important and so interesting to learn about it! I wish more people took the time to find out about our founders and why they established the Constitution as they did. Visiting from Sweet Tea & Friends today!
