Prepared for the Unexpected

The Bible records the story of people who were prepared for the unexpected. When the great flood occurred, one family was prepared. Noah was attentive to God and received instruction. He obeyed.

Samuel anointed Jesse’s youngest son (a shepherd) to be King of Israel. After years in the desert, being pursued by Saul, David became King of Israel.

Mary was told by an angel that she would bear a son while still a virgin. And Mary said, “Behold I am a servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” Luke 1:38

When Mary and Joseph brought Jesus to the temple, Simeon and Anna recognized the promised Messiah.

It is important to be aware of God at work in the world. God has given us his word, the Bible. He has given us the family. He invites us to pray.

My son’s diagnosis of leukemia 37 years ago came as a shock. We had God’s word and a community to pray with. My husband and I worked together and learned to appreciate the strengths of each other.

It was hard and painful. We grieved for our son, but we came through it with God’s help. I am so thankful for my husband!

In this election season we have discussed politics. We have the tools to be prepared for the election and the days that follow.

We think of our children and grandchildren. What is best for the country going forward? God gives us the opportunity to pray; we can ask for wisdom and discernment. We can vote and continue to pray for our country.

  1. God’s will is ever-perfect;
    on this I here reflect.
He’s King and I am subject
    but I did not expect
    the latest words He’s spoken
    into this part of life,
that my leg would be broken
    as part of cancer’s strife.
Perhaps I held me up in pride
like the thief upon the cross,
and to ensure that hubris died
He bid me take the loss
of what had been such strength of limb
that my walk might lean on Him
