Two books that I have read recently were pleasant stories developed around historical figures. The stories wove historical facts and settings together. I could read a few chapters before bed and think about the characters.
Mount Vernon Love Story by Mary Higgins Clark was first published in 1968 and republished in 1996. The story of George and Martha Washington revolves around moments in our country’s history. I found the description of Mt. Vernon, the home and gardens, to be fascinating. I learned some things about George Washington– his interest in farming, his leadership skills, his height. And I learned about Martha’s devotion to her children.
Christmas with the Queen was written by Hazel Gaynor and Heather Webb. It is a delightful story, covering the early years of Queen Elizabeth’s reign—1952 to 1957. The book is sprinkled with historical facts and sites. I enjoyed reading about the royal family Christmas at Sandringham, and the complexity of royal family life.
Woven through the encounter with Queen Elizabeth is the story of a young woman with and unexpected pregnancy during the 1950s. What would she do?
I followed her story with interest as she became a BBC reporter. Her relationship with the chef for the royal family was rather tangled up in a secret. It took time for the issues this couple faced to resolve.
Both historical novels emphasized the bonds of family. The characters encountered difficulties and times of joy. Despite troubles the relationships endured.
Carol these sound great! I appreciate your reviews. I’m always on the lookout for new reads and recommendations.
Thanks bunches for sharing with Sweet Tea & Friends this month sweet friend.
I read Christmas with the Queen last fall, and it was a delightful preparation for the Christmas season!
I read Mount Vernon Love Story a few years ago and I remember it fondly. I will have to look into reading Christmas with the Queen. Thank you for bringing it to my attention.
