Gardens and the Gift of Life

Last Saturday my daughter and I went on a garden walk sponsored by a garden club. We visited five homes with elaborately kept gardens. After hard work the home owners had achieved a theme for their garden. We saw cottage gardens, a garden focused on native plants, a garden with water fountains among the plants. A garden situated on the high point of the town with a beautiful view.

The cottage gardens showed artwork and pleasant design.

I enjoyed seeing plants that were new to me. I had never seen red yarrow before. The name of the ground cover with huge leaves made my daughter and I giggle. Tractor seat ligularia.

I suppose if I were to name my garden I might call it the berry garden—although I am trying my best to grow tomatoes and vegetables as well. I made some mixed berry jelly this week, experimenting with a recipe.

It is nice to see good outcomes.

This week I read a book by Elizabeth Berg, Life: A Love Story. The author once worked as a registered nurse, like myself. Berg tells the story of a 92-year-old woman looking back on her life. Flo treasures the memories she has, as she finds items that she has kept over the years.

After a bad diagnosis, Flo is preparing to pass the best of her life to a girl she once nurtured. She will pass physical and spiritual gifts to the young woman.

It was a good read.
