Through the years that I have worked in maternity care I have supported the health of mothers and babies. I am saddened by the view of sexuality in our culture and its effect on the family. Change has come slowly and insidiously.
Our human nature can guide us to trust in science and our human knowledge instead of the wisdom and truth that God gives in his word. Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. Genesis 2:24. Sexual intimacy is a gift in marriage.
Throughout the past century a new narrative about sexuality has been gradually adopted.
Gina Dimuro wrote an article about Alfred Kinsey who is considered the father of the sexual revolution. In 1948 Alfred Kinsey published his first book on human sexuality, focused on multiple ways of self-pleasure. It is interesting that Billy Graham issued a warning.
“It is impossible to estimate the damage this book will do to the already deteriorating morals of America.”
The second book was published in 1953 and the two books became known as the Kinsey Report.
In 1957 the pill was approved for treating menstrual irregularities and in 1960 it was approved for birth control. Congress questioned the safety of the hormonal pill but it was approved.
The birth control pill was Margaret Sanger’s life long goal. Some years ago I read Sanger’s autobiography.
In 2010 Life Site News published an article about the connection between the birth control pill and breast cancer. Dr. Angela Lanfranchi is a a breast surgical oncologist. According to data accumulated by Dr, Lanfranchi, the hormonal pill increases the incidence of breast cancer.
Lanfranchi offered a wealth of statistical data from various sources to support a fact that is known by the medical community to be true yet is rarely acknowledged: use of the pill has been strongly linked to an increased risk of breast cancer. The pill is also believed to increase the risk of cervical cancer and liver cancer.
The 1960s and 1970s became known for the sexual revolution.
In the 1970s the divorce rate increased.
In 1973 the Supreme Court ruled on Roe v. Wade legalizing abortion nationwide. It has taken 50 years to strike down this ruling, acknowledging that the constitution does not give the right to abortion. The states will decide how to handle abortion.
So, where are we now? The incidence of breast cancer has increased. Abortion takes place up to the time of birth in some states. Aborted baby parts are sold for research purposes. The United States fertility rate has dropped below replacement, meaning that we have an aging population with less future support for the elderly.
I cannot comprehend that the “right” to abortion is a top issue in an election year. We are on a trajectory that promotes a self-centered view of life that in detrimental to the family and the future of our country.
God’s design for human life, the family and community is good! Pray for our country to recognize the sanctity of human life.
