Chocolate and Books

Chocolate is my favorite sweet treat. Sometimes I will have a bit while reading a book. But that is dangerous. Chocolate tends to melt on fingers and soon there is a smudge on a page that must be quickly addressed.

My worst disaster with a book was not caused by chocolate, but rather cherries. I was silly to have an open book on the table when I was pitting cherries, very juicy cherries. The cherry juice splattered a page of the book. I tried to clean the page, even used white-out, but made it worse. It was a library book. I went to the library and told the librarian that I needed to pay for the book. She asked me to show her the page. With a red face I opened the book to the page, and she began to laugh. I paid for the book.

Recently I read two books, making sure to have clean fingers. The Martha’s Vineyard Beach and Book Club by Martha Hall Kelly is a historical novel. The story is set in Martha’s Vineyard during World War II. Teenage girls, a book club, German U-boats, and military operations on the beach bring the story to life. I found it hard to put the book down.

The Aviator and the Showman by Laurie Gwen Shapiro is a biography of Amelia Earhart. The subtitle is more explicit, Amelia Earhart, George Putnam and the marriage that made an American Icon. It is a deep dive into the years that Amelia became interested in flying, her relationship with George Putnam (publisher) and the events and decisions that led to her fatal flight. It was a long, hard read that left me sad.

  1. Oh the stories librarians must have! I bet yours wouldn’t even make the top 10 even though it definitely is worth a chuckle.
