Standing on High Places is a biography of Hannah Hurnard written by Isabel Anders. Hannah Hurnard wrote the allegory of a Christian’s life titled Hinds’ Feet on High Places. Anders follows Hannah’s life from her choice to follow Jesus and her decision to pursue mission work. She began evangelical outreach in England and then went to Israel. I was surprised to learn that she was in Israel throughout WWII, reaching out to both Jews and Arabs. This book gives insight into the experiences that led to Hannah to write Hind’s Feet on High Places. She wrote a number of books after this one.

The Anxious Generation: How the Great Rewiring of Childhood is Causing an Epidemic of Mental Illness is a heavily researched book. (There are 65 pages of notes at the end of the book.) Jonathan Haidt, a social psychologist, is the author.

Two changes have occurred that have affected Gen Z. The time that young children can engage in free play has diminished. Parents have become overprotective. Secondly, the iPhone has become widely available, allowing children to spend unrestricted time in a virtual world. The result of these two changes has led to less socialization in the real world and loneliness. Girls and boys are affected in different ways. The author explains these differences.

I did take issue with the multiple references to evolution throughout the book.

Each chapter is packed with information. I was glad that at the end of each chapter, Haidt included a summary of his main points. Towards the end of the book there is a chapter titled What Parents Can Do Now. This was my favorite chapter.

Land of Dreams by Lauraine Snelling is historical fiction. The main character is a Norwegian immigrant that arrives in Iowa in 1889. Amalia is a woman of faith who tragically lost her parents to a cholera epidemic during the boat trip to America. She becomes the guardian of a little girl, Ruth, who also lost her parents. Together they work to restore a boarding house in Iowa. As they garden and care for farm animals, they develop relationships with people in need. A crisis occurs when Amalia’s guardianship of Ruth is challenged.

Carol is a follower of Jesus and a wife, mom & grandma. She worked for many years as a childbirth nurse and prenatal educator. She has retired from clinical work. She has written articles for nursing journals and devotionals. Her novel, Aliisa's Letter, was published in 2010 and she is currently working on another project.

Thanks so much for sharing with Sweet Tea & Friends this month sweet friend. I’m so happy you’re here.

  2. I think I have Land of Dreams on my Kindle but haven’t read it yet. I do enjoy Snelling’s writing. The Anxious Generation sounds like it handles a very important topic, something many of us have been concerned about. Happy Reading!
